Coronavirus update (13 March)

13 March 2020

*Please note that we have currently suspended event pass sales as we await government advice on mass gatherings*

The Word Alive trustees met on 11th March and discussed the current situation. We have been in touch with Public Health Wales as well as discussing issues with Pontins. We continue to monitor government announcements and will be following their guidelines as they become available.

We do not intend to cancel Word Alive unless directed to by the government. The most recent government statement has clarified that the cancellation of large events would not be of benefit at the current time. The latest announcements also advise that people with a persistent cough or fever should isolate for seven days. The situation is changing on a daily basis and we will update with any significant change in line with any government advice. If any action is required, please be assured that we will follow the advice given to enable safety and comfort for our guests.

Meanwhile, we are working hard to get everything ready for the event, including taking extra care in relation to public health. We have been risk assessing the various parts of the event and have developed an action plan.

Our action plan includes the following:

  • Extra cleaning before and during the event including ‘touch areas’ like door handles and switches. This will involve both the Word Alive team and Pontins staff.
  • Extra handwashing facilities around the site. Marquees will have sink units as will the restaurant.
  • Meal/restaurant procedures to minimise common handling of utensils.
  • Children’s games to avoid hand holding or touch.
  • An action plan if anyone becomes symptomatic during the event, including chalets for self-isolation, procedures for following up close contacts, registering for testing etc.
  • If you would like to see our action plan in full please click here.

You will be aware that current advice suggests that those with underlying health issues should be extra careful to avoid infection. While we don’t want to discourage anyone from coming to Word Alive we’d ask you to consider what you think is the safest course of action for you.

We’re also very aware the government is considering how to delay the spread of the virus. That could include social distancing measures like banning events. If that happened then we would of course comply, but it would cause huge disappointment as well as significant financial issues. Some of you have contacted us to express your support and give advice – thank you for that.

Please join us in praying for:

  • Word Alive to go ahead responsibly and safely
  • all those who have coronavirus as well as doctors and health professionals caring for them
  • protection of the vulnerable
  • this time of uncertainty and fragility to lead people to turn to Jesus

We will update this page with any new information, as well as communicating via email and our social media channels. We will be sending out final details about the event to all guests who have made a booking next week. That will include any more guidance available on coronavirus, so you have the most up to date information.

We advise you to keep your eye on the latest government advice by looking at the guidelines given by the NHS and Public Health England / Wales. A poster giving current information (as of 6 March) can be seen below.
